Brain Sense: Learning About the Brain

Through Puzzles, Illusions and Hands-on Activities

Michael DiSpezio

Join Houghton Mifflin Harcourt author, television host, and Brooklyn-born educator/scientist Michael A. DiSpezio as he facilitates a journey in which the latest brain research is explained using an assortment of mind-twisting puzzles, stimulating activities, and three dimensional illusions.

In Mr. DiSpezio's entertaining and humorous style, he'll challenge you to construct an understanding of neural function by assuming the role of active audience participant. From understanding perception to learning how to maintain a brain friendly environment, you'll see how the neurobiology of learning emerges through the mechanics of these inexpensive and easy-to-share experiences.

In addition, you'll learn the techniques for capturing and displaying your own library of 3D images!

All attendees get 3D glasses to keep.

Other activities included observing pollution dispersion and using Kill-A-Watt meters to determine 'phantom energy', the amount of energy used by an appliance when it is not on.

Participants appreciated being given the Kill-A-Watt meters and many other items which NYSERDA provided to them for their classrooms.

It's time to renew your NYBTA membership at
REDUCED COST

As you know, NYBTA has gone GREEN and has ceased sending meeting notices via USPS and is sending notices via e-mail and also posting them on our web site. This saves paper and postage and, with our all-volunteer staff, saves money.

We are passing the savings on to you. NYBTA HAS CUT ITS MEMBERSHIP DUES IN HALF.

We will continue to have meetings and events and continue to be a clearinghouse for information of use to biology teachers. Information of events sponsored by other organizations will be posted on our web site and e-mailed to you as a single URL or post which will not clutter your in-box. NYBTA is an NABT affiliate and members get discounted registration at the SCONYC conference.

Why you should join NYBTA

As schools continue to move into different phases of educational reform, one factor that is consistent in each school plan is the need for professional development. Finding programs to assist in professional development in a convenient and enjoyable form is often difficult. The New York Biology Teachers’ Association can help.

We are an organization of teachers helping teachers. For more than 100 years the NYBTA has been providing our members with lectures, workshops, and field trips in a collegial atmosphere that makes professional development meaningful and enjoyable.

Whether you are seeking ideas for creative lessons or wishing to hone your skills, NYBTA is for you. We provide opportunities for teachers in a sociable atmosphere.

NYBTA members have the opportunity to enter their students' research projects in NYBTA's Otto Burgdorf Student Science Research Competition.

Regular participation not only helps one grow professionally, but increases the number of colleagues with whom one can interact. Our modest $10.00 annual dues are possible because of our all-volunteer staff and our use of e-mail and our website for notices. Join us and share the experience!

NYBTA is an affiliate of the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) and the Science Council of New York City (SCONYC).

NYBTA members are entitled to a discount at the annual SCONYC conference.

Become active beyond your school.

Please share information about NYBTA with your colleagues and encourage them to become active members through regular participation in NYBTA activities.

The New York Biology Teachers Association was founded in 1899. Through its activities, the NYBTA seeks to promote an understanding and appreciation of Biology among all citizens.

It would be best to call the site captain to ensure that your selected
site needs more volunteers.

Hempstead Plains is a prairie in the middle of Nassau County at Nassau Community College. Finding an endangered species here a few years ago went a long way in getting approval to have the area preserved.

Betsy Gulotta of the Friends of Hempstead Plains led our walk on this crisp fall day.

Although the weather forecast predicted sunshine, it was a chill and damp start to our day in Inwood. Bright sunshine eventually emerged.

This far north, Manhattan narrows and there is no East Side. The street immediately adjacent to the Harlem River, which flows into the East River and forms Manhattan's eastern boundary, is Tenth Avenue (which everyone knows is on the West Side).

We discovered a jewel in Swindler Cove, a New York City park under the care of the New York Restoration Project, founded by Bette Midler. Hidden behind P.S. 5 on Dyckman Street at the end of the Harlem River Drive, this once illegal dump has been converted into a mini-botanic and community garden with a boathouse on the Harlem River.

The New York Restoration Project reclaims, restores and revitalizes under-resourced parks, community gardens and open spaces throughout NYC as wel as providing environmental education programs. The NYRP educators are available to do programs, free of charge, at their many locations around the city or can come to your school.
